The Shee

The Shee are an all-female Scottish-English folk ensemble who showcase powerful vocals and instrumental prowess. Their music features original compositions alongside a wealth of traditional material. Their mesmerising mix of Scottish folk, Gaelic song, and bluegrass has earned them fast growing recognition.

Since forming, the Shee have steadily built a reputation for innovative arrangements and immaculate live performances, and have undoubtedly earned the respect of their peers. The Shee's latest project is no run of the mill, sequential album, either, but a thoughtful, considered celebration of their first decade together.

To celebrate the band's ten year anniversary, they launched their album Continuum, which was conceived by the band with Celtic Connections, one of the most influential and important festivals in contemporary British folk music.

Songs are delivered by full bodied, confident vocals, a call to arms, like the curious Cradle Song where Olivia Ross continues to sing even when the storm is closing in around her. Tunes are wordless songs, where instrumental interplay conveys the message just as easily as lyrics, like the talkative fiddles in ‘The Vampire Rabbit of Newcastle’.

The band is made up of Shona Mooney, Rachel Newton, Olivia Ross, Laura-Beth Salter and Amy Thatcher - who regulary provides accordian backing for North East based folk heavyweight Kathryn Tickell.
