Mike McGrother

The Wild Rover’s '500 Miles’

Spend an evening of song, anecdote and craic with Teesside’s very own ‘Wild Rover’ Mike McGrother as he shares his recent adventures walking and singing from Ireland to Teesside…and back again. What began as a personal family pilgrimage turned into somewhat of an obsession and in these performances Mike will tell his stories with music, humour, plenty of laughs and emotional insight.

Frontman of North East band The Wildcats of Kilkenny, Mike’s adventures began in 2016 when he decided to trace the route of his 19th century ancestors and so armed with guitar, fiddle and…a Pub Table he took a one way flight to Carrickmacross in Ireland. Through wind, rain, snow and hail, he made his way on foot back to the North East of England collecting and sharing commonality from the communities he encountered.

The following year, having discovered that the first book printed in Stockton was the diary of a man who travelled by a variety of means to Kilkenny in 1778, Mike set off again, this time walking to see his Kilkenny dwelling best friend via walking, busking and relying on the good will of others.

…But all of this began in 2013 when, destroyed by depression and anxiety, Mike reached out for help and was told the only way to get better was to take one step at a time…

…This is his story.

The Wild Rover’s 500 miles is told in a two part evening and features Mike along with multi-instrumentalist and Jarrow-vian Tony McNally. You will laugh, cry and never look at a pair of Converse or a pot of sudacrem in the same way again.
