The survival of primates: why they matter and the challenge of saving them
‘From lemurs to orangutans and tarsiers to gorillas, primates are captivating and remarkably diverse. They are also in dire trouble. Sixty per cent of primate species are threatened with extinction, and 75 per cent are in decline. This dismal situation is all because of one species: us. I will present the incredible diversity of primates, their ecological importance, the threats they face and the solutions that could save them.’ – Jo Setchell

  • About the speaker - Jo Setchell

Jo Setchell is a primatologist, Professor of Anthropology at Durham University and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Primatology. She has spent many years in Gabon studying mandrills – one of the most extraordinary mammals in the world. This work is highly collaborative, integrating a wide variety of methods, including behavioural observations, morphology, demography, genetics, endocrinology, chemical ecology, disease and dental histology.

Jo has also studied conducted primate fieldwork in Cameroon, Congo, Malaysia and Peru and visited many other primate range countries. Her experiences have convinced her that conservation requires a deep understanding of the historical, political and social context of our interactions with our fellow primates if it is to be successful and thus requires a social science approach.
