ARC is proud to share the success of On The Edge, a new project developed through Tees Valley New Creatives (TVNC) – ARC’s artist development programme supporting emerging creative talent across the region.
The initiative was made possible thanks to £24, 700 from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland in partnership with Thirteen group. This funding is part of the Cleveland Unit for the Reduction of Violence (CURV) Knife Crime Action Fund.
Funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, this partnership enabled a team of six TVNC artists to create and deliver an impactful educational theatre project aimed at helping to reduce knife crime among young people in the Tees Valley.
At the centre of the project was On The Edge, a 30-minute interactive theatre production exploring the real-life impact of knife crime on young people and their communities. The piece was created and performed by TVNC members, Alberto Dumba, Izzy Neish and Kieron Barker, who also led post-show workshops in schools across the region.
The creative team also included TVNC members Zara King, who designed and built a portable set and props; Niamah Calling, who sourced and styled the production’s costumes; and Lucy Harper, who designed a curriculum-linked resource pack for teachers.
The project showcased the breadth of talent within Tees Valley New Creatives, bringing together artists from different disciplines to produce a meaningful piece of work.
Since its launch, Tees Valley New Creatives has become a vital contributor to the region’s creative sector. The initiative has worked with more than 200 employers and education partners to bridge the gap between training and employment. Over 130 members have gone on to secure paid roles within the creative industries, and many have launched their own successful businesses and artistic ventures.
Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair of Arts Council England, commented: “Tees Valley New Creatives is a valuable contributor to talent development and retention… a model that many places might follow. What an impressive collection of artists, committed to developing their work in the Tees Valley.”
