This World Book Day, we’re celebrating the power of stories and proudly launching our new Family Literacy Programme at ARC.
We’ve pledged our support to the National Literacy Trust’s Year of Reading, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle the decline in reading enjoyment and encourage everyone to “Go All In” on their passions through reading. Whether it’s football, fashion, family-time or fairy tales, reading helps us go deeper into the things we love.
Recent research shows that only one in three children enjoy reading in their free time. Here in the North East, the challenge is even greater: 60% of wards have significant literacy needs, and 1 in 10 children don’t own a single book.
From May our entire family programme will be based on children’s books starting with a bold new version of Rapunzel taking place during May half-term on Wed 27 May at 11.30am and 2.30pm.
Based on the beloved picture book by Bethan Woollvin, golden-haired Rapunzel takes charge of her own destiny in this bold and witty tale. Not a prince in sight! Rapunzel is trapped in her lofty tower by a wicked witch, who lops off the locks of her beautiful hair and sells them for profit. Can Rapunzel ever figure out a way to escape? This bold and funny story removes the handsome prince altogether, making Rapunzel the mistress of her own destiny.
Around the performance, families can make recyclable crowns, step inside a pop-up princess tower for photos, and visit Drake The Bookshop to pick up a copy of the story and other favourites to enjoy at home.
We’ve got plenty more incredible performances on the way, including some very big names (but we can’t announce them just yet – not now!) so keep your eyes peeled!
ARC is also home to Our Little Library, based on the first floor, it’s a cosy spot to curl up with a book, explore new stories, or share a quiet moment together. Free to enjoy whenever you visit, our little library is fully stocked with plenty of books, activities and fun for all ages.
At ARC, we believe stories don’t just belong on the page or the stage, they belong in the heart of our community and here at ARC, we’re going all in!
