ARC’s “Silver Programme” which already caters for this age group across a range of activities, has enjoyed a recent boost having secured £21,330 from the Skills Funding Agency as part of the new Community Learning Innovation Fund.
Managed by NIACE, the project seeks to improve the wellbeing of older people in Stockton on Tees through their involvement in regular creative arts learning activity, in addition to delivering new and creative learning opportunities, particularly for disadvantaged people to support social and economic well-being, for stronger communities.
The funding which has been allocated to strengthen ARC’s Silver Programme over the next 12 months has been quickly put to good use. Over 50s attendees are already regularly invited to take a seat on The Silver Sofa, in order to consult with visiting artists, tutors, and members of the ARC team on accessing arts and activities. Taking into account these frequent discussions, ARC will be orchestrating a Silver Taster Week, with activities ranging from Dance to Acting; all at the request of the venues over 50s attendees.
Toni Harris, who regularly visits ARC, partaking in the Silver Singers class on a Wednesday, explained why she appreciated the programme of events dedicated to over 50s,
“It’s nice that there is a consideration of older people at ARC and to have something to do during the day. The communication is really helpful and we are building a really nice relationship with ARC.”
• ARC’s Silver Singers will be performing before Smith Dance Theatre’s show, Agnes and Walter: A Little Love Story, which takes place at ARC on Thur 15 Nov at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced F: £10 C: £8 and can be purchased here.
