I always look forward to the ARC family Christmas show and this year is no different – I can’t wait to see The Man Who Wanted to be a Penguin, and to have loads of lovely families and children in the building to enjoy it too! I’m especially hoping to pick up some tips because who wouldn’t like to be a penguin?

“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster” (Goodfella’s, 1990)
Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas was the first gangster film that I remember really loving. I remember staying up late with my mum, feeling a little bit uneasy about the amount of swearing… but falling totally, gleefully, in love. In love with the guitar licks of The Rolling Stones, with the complicated, troubled characters, and with the swagger, style and absolute confidence that the film just, radiates.
The Irishman is Martin Scorsese’s newest film, and sees him return to the Gangster Genre he has helped define. It tells the epic story of 1950s truck driver Frank Sheeran, who gets involved with Jimmy Hoffa — a powerful Teamster tied to organized crime.
It features some of cinemas biggest and most iconic stars – frequent collaborator Robert DeNiro, the infamously “funny” Joe Pesci has come out of retirement for his role, and for the first time – Scorsese is working with The “Godfather” himself, Al Pacino. You only have to look at the CV’s of these people to see the impact they’ve had on cinema over the last fifty years.
This might well be Scorsese’s last gangster film – it might well be the last time the stars of Goodfella’s, Raging Bull & Casino all work together. It might be the last chance we get to see DeNiro & Pacino on-screen together. And I can’t wait to soak in every single second.
