The Critic is a deliciously dark and sharp-witted thriller set in 1930s London ‘theatreland’ featuring an all-star cast.

When the most feared and vicious theatre critic in town Jimmy Erskine finds himself suddenly in the crosshairs of the Daily Chronicle’s new owner David Brooke, he strikes a sinister Faustian pact with struggling actress Nina Land who is desperate to win his favour.

  language

  There is use of strong language (‘f**k’). Milder terms include ‘bugger’, ‘bastard’, ‘bloody’, ‘sod’, ‘shit’, ‘arse’, ‘God’ and ‘damn’.

  sex

  There are references to sex work, and to a character’s preference for ‘rough sex’. The term ‘f**k’ is used in the sexual sense. There is brief partial rear nudity as a person gets out of bed after implied off-screen sex.

  discrimination

  There are scenes of implicitly criticised historical homophobia and racism, including use of terms such as ‘queer’ and ‘sod’. Two men are arrested and subsequently interrogated by police for kissing in the street, an act described by various characters using terms such as as ‘unnatural’, ‘indecent’ and ‘perversion’. A gang of white supremacists confront a same-sex couple in a threatening manner. In another scene a woman complains that she should ‘never have married a Jew’.

  sexual violence and sexual threat

  A person attempts to coerce a woman into having a sexual relationship with a man by threatening her career. Another man is blackmailed using threats of a false accusation of ‘assault’.

  suicide and self-harm

  A person takes their own life off screen. Other scenes contain non-graphic verbal references to suicide and attempted suicide.

  injury detail

  There are brief images of an undetailed dead body following off-screen violence.

  alcohol and smoking

  Characters are shown getting drunk and smoking cigarettes.
