Review: Unruly

a person with bright pink hair seated on what appears to be a blue couch or chair in what looks like a stage setting. They're wearing glasses, a plaid shirt over dark clothing, and lace gloves or wristbands. The person is gesturing with one hand raised, appearing to be speaking or performing. The setting has a dark background with some colourful elements visible to the side, including what looks like decorative items and possibly a screen or backdrop with vibrant colours.

How to begin. Perhaps I should start by setting the scene. The stage was beautifully crafted and jam packed with intricate detail. The symbolism behind this production was not that of shallow depth. Moss and greenery covered what looked like a living room, decorated with history, scattered pieces of powerful women’s past, like somewhere once domesticated now rural and overgrown, reclaimed by the earth.

Now, the story.

The main characters consisted of Marina and her best friend Suze, played to perfection. Vici’s talent for story telling is something that left me in utter awe. Such a powerful message portrayed through such stunning imagery. The cyclical structure and recurring themes were masterfully crafted, leaving the audience exactly where they began, but with more insight and a much evolved mind. I left my seat with a completely new perspective on societal issues surrounding diversity, and two new characters added to the gallery in my heart: Marina and Suze.

Without spoiling it too much, it follows the story of Marina and Suze’s fight for equality. With their slogan “Piss on Pity” and Suze’s recurring rendition of “bollocks to you”. There are a few other characters but the show is a narration from Marina.

The music was absolutely unreal. I wish I could put it into better words but there really is no way to capture it, it is something you must personally experience. I felt like I was being serenaded by some of history’s strongest women and lulled into their legacies. A menagerie of sounds, cacophonous, at times gentle and alluring. And as I left the room the lyrics of a beautiful melody ricocheted around my mind like a incantation from “hands of witchcraft”. “Top to toe” I was enveloped by the sounds, much like Ophelia was enveloped by the waters surrounding her, and Marina when she lay in the stream.

I will continue to spread the message of this wonderful show and I urge everyone who reads this to go and experience the power of Unruly.
