‘Home’ explores the objects, memories and ideas which come together to form our concept of ‘home’ presented by women in prison.
The work, produced by 15 women in a North East prison, uses papier mache sculpture and paint to reconstruct objects which are significant to their experience of ‘home’. It asks whether ‘home’ is still a meaningful idea for women whose closest experience to it might have been a care-home, a prison cell or the city streets, and speaks of how we find home in past memory.
The exhibition will run from Tuesday 22 November until Friday 2 December. On the opening night (Tue 22 Nov), we will be joined by several women who contributed to the exhibition inside, and have since been released, who will speak about their experiences.
