Teesside dancer dons the disco suit for The Band

A Teesside dancer who visited us last year with his first show Sleight of Hands is making a welcome return with leading dance company Levantes Dance to perform in a spectacular show with a 70s disco twist.

Nathan Johnston, who is orginally from Grovehill in Middlesbrough, swapped Teesside for the bright lights of London aged just eighteen to take up his dream of studying at the London Contemporary Dance School.

After premiering Sleight of Hands here last year, which was his first fully choreographed theatre piece, Nathan is returning this week to perform in The Band alongside Eleni Edipidi from Levantes Dance.

The show is set in the disco era of the 1970s and is based around Bruno and Sandy – a couple who try and revive their (not-so) glittering career and give fame another shot.

Through their sheer defiance and blissful devotion to each other, their dreams rely on each other, but will they succeed? Featuring humour, an impressive wardrobe, a fur stair case, lots of glitter and an incredible array of acrobatics, the show is interlaced with some well recognised tracks and beautiful ariel movement.

Commenting on his return to Teesside and his work with Levantes Dance, Nathan said: “I was originally a rugby player and chose to study dance as I thought it would be the easy option – before I knew better! My passion for contemporary dance grew from there. I moved from Middleborough to train at London Contemporary Dance School and I’ve been in London working as a choreographer and performer since graduating. Eleni wanted to try out some ideas of working with such different sizes, so we started collaborating, and as we played with ideas, The Band came out.

“The thing that’s really come out of it more than anything is that idea of balance in a relationship. It’s about how the balance tips and a relationship changes and how you can support each other in different ways.”

The Band takes place at 7pm on Wednesday 29 March and is Pay What You Decide. Tickets can be booked here or by calling 01642 525199.
