In blood-soaked Tudor England, twice married, accomplished, and educated Katherine Parr, reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical King Henry VIII. Her consent to marry him carries great personal risk, given that her predecessors are either vanquished, beheaded, or dead. When Henry appoints her as Regent, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her. Henry’s courtiers, suspecting she’s sympathetic to radical Protestant beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King.

Once Henry returns to England, his courtiers convince him to turn his fury on the nation’s radicals, including Katherine’s childhood friend Anne Askew, who becomes one of the scores of people convicted of treason and burned at the stake. Horrified and privately grieving, Katherine finds herself under ever-increasing scrutiny and suspicion. Knowing that even a whisper of scandal might lead to her downfall, Katherine must unleash her own scheme to fight for survival.

  violence

  Sequences include menacing and pervasive domestic abuse displayed by a husband towards his wife. In one scene, he stuffs his fingers into her mouth after forcing her to recite Latin and he is violent towards her whilst she is pregnant. There is also a prolonged scene of strong violence in which someone is choked and references are made to people being tortured, beheaded and burnt alive.

  Moments of moderate threat occur in which a King and his advisors becomes increasingly tyrannical. His subjects are menacingly interrogated about his wife’s behaviour. A woman is arrested and imprisoned with the threat of death hanging over her.

  language

  Infrequent use of strong language (‘f**k’) is accompanied by moderate (‘snatch’, ‘whore’) and milder terms such as ‘piss’ and ‘God’.

  There are brief scenes of strong sex, one of which features buttock nudity. References are made to adultery.

  A sustained scene of sexual threat occurs in which a man pushes his pregnant wife to the floor, holds her down with his foot, rips her clothing and attempts to rape her. However, she fights him off before the attack progresses.

  There is an upsetting scene in which a woman suffers a miscarriage accompanied by sight of blood and clots. A man’s bloody and gory infected leg is seen as it is tended to by medics. There is sight of a man’s organs being removed post mortem.
