This month I’m looking forward to The Tin Foil Astronaut, which is the story of Alba, a young amateur astronaut who is joining the space race and has even made her own rocket! The show was a co-commission between ARC, Arts Centre Washington, and Queens Hall Hexham and it’s really exciting to have it back in the building.
I missed it the last time that it was shown so I’m really happy to be getting another opportunity to see it. The show features puppets and live original songs, and it has interactive elements which I’ve never seen before in a family show so I’m excited to see how that will work.
I’m also quite excited for At Eternity’s Gate, which is a film about a period of Vincent Van Gogh’s life. I don’t usually get excited for films, but as a fan of Van Gogh I’m very interested in this, and it looks fantastic.

This year is the tenth anniversary of Stockton Calling and it’s one of the best days in the calendar for music fans in the north-east. Due to demand for tickets we’ve had to open up another stage at ARC this year, and although there are some brilliant bands playing in the other venues, we’ve got some superb acts on the bill here on the two stages at ARC that I’m looking forward to seeing.
ARC 2 is usually our theatre space but this year will be turned into a 250 capacity music venue. Headlining the stage are The Orielles who’ve been tearing it up over the last few years and there are some great bands on the undercard as well. The one I’m really excited about are itoldyouiwouldeatyou. They’ve got great politics and are just the sort of quirky, discordant emo rock that I like. I’m also quite keen to see Motherland who open up the stage.
On the main stage, it’s difficult to look past headlining band The Futureheads. Stockton Calling is their first show after a six year hiatus and early reports are that their new album is fantastic. Elsewhere on the bill, Sophie & The Giants are absolutely superb. I missed them when they played Stockton last year so this is a great chance to catch them. They’re a band that’s definitely on the rise.
Stockton Calling sells out every year and it’s easy to understand why. There are over eighty bands in one town on one day with the best of regional acts along with some emerging national artists and some really big names headlining stages. And for just £25. Get a ticket as soon as you can because it’s going to be a great day.
