Five year old Lawand is on a quest to find a world where there are people like him people who will understand him. Since birth, Lawand has been profoundly Deaf and unable to communicate with those around him. He undertakes a treacherous journey with his family from Iraq to Derby, home of the Royal School for the Deaf.

    Discrimination

    There are references to discrimination and bullying against a deaf child.

    Theme

    There are references to a family of refugees being threatened with deportation, and to a deaf child’s struggles to communicate with his family who do not initially care to learn sign language. At one point, while facing deportation, the boy’s father recalls feeling like he did not want to live anymore. The narrative has a reassuring outcome.
